How to migrate from Telnyx to Twilio
A developer-focused guide to moving your messaging integration from Telnyx to Twilio: what changes, how the request format and auth differ, and a step-by-step checklist.
Telnyx is a licensed telecom carrier that runs a CPaaS platform with APIs for SMS, MMS, RCS, WhatsApp, voice, and email over its own private global IP network. Twilio is a customer-engagement platform offering communications APIs across the same core channels. On the messaging.dev Score, Telnyx rates 78/100 and Twilio 88/100; this guide covers what actually changes when you move your sending code from one to the other.
What changes when you move
Channels. Both providers expose the same channel set: SMS, MMS, RCS, WhatsApp, voice, and email. Neither supports Viber, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, or Apple Messages for Business. You neither gain nor lose a channel in this migration.
Compliance and data residency. Identical on paper: both hold GDPR, ISO 27001, SOC 2, and HIPAA alignment, and both offer US and EU servers with a data-residency choice. Nothing to reconfigure at the provider level here.
What you gain. Twilio adds a $15 trial credit (Telnyx offers no free developer credit), a sandbox/test environment (Telnyx has none), and broader reach — 180 countries covered versus 130. Both ship high-quality docs and seven official SDKs covering the same languages (Node.js, Python, Java, PHP, Ruby, Go, and .NET/C#).
What you trade. Telnyx’s advertised SMS start price is $0.004 per message part; Twilio’s is $0.0079 per US segment, so per-message list cost roughly doubles (both add carrier fees and offer volume discounts; Twilio also has committed-use tiers). Telnyx exposes REST plus SMPP; Twilio exposes REST plus SMTP, so an SMPP binding has no direct equivalent on Twilio.

Three things change:
- Endpoint. Telnyx posts to a single global URL,
https://api.telnyx.com/v2/messages. Twilio embeds your Account SID in the path:https://api.twilio.com/2010-04-01/Accounts/{AccountSid}/Messages.json. - Authentication. Telnyx uses a Bearer API key in the
Authorizationheader. Twilio uses HTTP Basic auth, with your Account SID as the username and Auth Token as the password (-u SID:token). - Payload. Telnyx takes a JSON body; Twilio takes form-urlencoded fields. The mapping is: sender
from→From, recipientto→To, message bodytext→Body. Note the capitalization and the switch from a JSON body to form data.
Migration checklist
- Create a Twilio account and generate your Account SID and Auth Token from the dashboard; claim the $15 trial credit.
- Provision or port a sending number, and register RCS/WhatsApp senders if you use those channels.
- Map the request fields:
from→From,to→To,text→Body, convert the JSON body to form-urlencoded data, and change auth from a Bearer header to Basic-u SID:token. - Re-point your sending code at the Account-scoped
Messages.jsonendpoint, or swap the Telnyx SDK for the Twilio SDK in the same language. - Re-test against Twilio’s sandbox/test environment before sending live traffic.
- Update delivery/status webhooks to Twilio’s callback format and re-point your callback URLs.
- Run both providers in parallel, comparing delivery receipts.
- Cut over once Twilio’s delivery numbers match, then decommission the Telnyx path.

Watch out for
- Higher list price. At $0.0079 per US segment versus $0.004 per message part, per-message cost roughly doubles at advertised rates, before any volume discount.
- No SMPP. Telnyx offers an SMPP binding; Twilio’s non-REST protocol is SMTP (for email). High-throughput SMPP integrations must move to REST.
- Lower published SLA figure. Telnyx advertises a 99.99% SLA; Twilio publishes 99.95% (Enterprise Edition).
No channels, certifications, or data-residency options are lost in this move — the trade-offs are price, protocol, and SLA figure, in exchange for a sandbox, free trial credit, and wider country coverage.
